What is Premodern?
The premodern format is invented by Martin Berlin. He designed a community based format which is closed, no new cards will enter. Its from era of the original border cards just after the inititial period of Old School. General speaking all cards printed in the period of 1995 and 2003 are legal until Wizards launched the new frame. The format is open to new players since WCD (Gold Border) and all new reprints are allowed and to a lot of players its bringing back sentiment and old decks from former extended and legacy. In premodern format some legacy and vintage staples are banned where other cards which are too powerful for mainstream formats are allowed to be played and thrive. Think of Survival of the Fittest, Gush, Oath of Druids and Windfall. Decks which are not good enough in modern magic any more and old mechanics lost and forgotten are key and powerful again
The format is community driven and rising in popularity. More and more tournaments are organized and created. Recently Wizards started supporting premodern as a trial on the client MTGO and we already see leagues and online tournaments expanding rapidly. With both a growing offline and online prescense premodern is growing worldwide with more and more tournaments, organized, casual and competitive play.
